African Yellowood is the national tree of South Africa Over 200 feet high and often 1000 - 1500 years old the massive trees were traditionally used by the Cape Dutch settlers since the 1600's for beams, flooring and furniture in their houses. Today in limited supply the wood is much sought after by quality furniture makers for its unique colour and durability. Yellowood from the ancient forests in the Amatola Region are selectively harvested with permission from the South African Forestry Service when the hardwoods are considered dead, dying or damaged.
